Harghita county has the highest percentage of Hungarians in Romania, just ahead of Covasna county. The Hungarians form the majority of the population in most of the county's municipalities, with Romanians concentrated in the northern and eastern part of the county (particularly Toplița and Bălan), as well as in the enclave of Voșlăbeni.

The Székelys of Harghita are mostly Roman Catholic, with Reformed and Unitarian minorities, while the ethnic Romanians are primarily Orthodox. Catholicism is strongest in the east, in the former Csíkszék, while Protestants are concentrated in the west, south and west of Odorheiu Secuiesc. Góry

Powierzchnia hrabstwa Harghita wynosi 6639 km². Składa się głównie z gór Karpat Wschodnich, takich jak Góry Ciuc (Ciuc), Góry Gheorgheni, Góry Klemensa i Harghita (Harghita). Góry te składają się głównie z wulkanicznych płaskowyżów, pogórza i gęstniej zaludnionych dolin rzecznych. 

Hargita megye területe 6639 km². Főként a Keleti-Kárpátok hegyeiből áll, mint például a Csíki-havasok (Ciuc), a Gyergyói-havasok, a Kelemen-havasok és a Hargita (Harghita). Ezen hegységek főként vulkanikus platókból, hegylábakból, és a sűrűbben lakott folyóvölgyekből állnak.

Początki gór są wulkaniczne, a okolica słynie z gorących źródeł. Harghita to jeden z najzimniejszych obszarów Rumunii, ale latem może być też dość gorąco. Jeśli pada wystarczająco dużo, klimat powiatu sprzyja grzybom leśnym. 

A hegyek eredete vulkanikus, a terület pedig híres meleg forrásairól. Hargita Románia egyik leghidegebb területe, ám nyáron meglehetősen meleg is lehet. Amennyiben elég eső esik, a megye klímája tökéletes az erdei gombák számára.

W hrabstwie znajdują się dwie ważne rzeki Rumunii, Mureş i Olt. Rzeki te wypływają z Marosfő i Csíkszentdomokos, kilka kilometrów od siebie. Mureş wypływa stąd na zachód, a następnie wpada do Cisy, podczas gdy Olt wpada do Dunaju na południe. (Jest to uchwycone przez legendę o Mureszach i Oltach). Harghita ma wiele pięknych atrakcji przyrodniczych, takich jak Jezioro Św. Anny, jezioro kraterowe pochodzenia wulkanicznego w południowej części hrabstwa, niedaleko Tusnadu. Killer Lake to górskie jezioro w pobliżu Gheorgheni. Cieśnina Békás to uderzająco piękna, wąska szczelina utworzona przez potok Békás. 

A megyében ered Románia két fontos folyója, a Maros és az Olt. Ezek a folyók Marosfőnél és Csíkszentdomokosnál erednek egymástól néhány kilométerre. A Maros innen nyugat felé folyik, majd a Tiszába ömlik, míg az Olt dél felé, a Dunába ömlik. (Ezt örökíti meg A Maros és az Olt legendája.)

Hargitának sok szép természeti látványossága van, például a Szent Anna-tó, mely egy vulkáni eredetű krátertó a megye déli részén, Tusnád közelében. A Gyilkos-tó egy hegyi tó Gyergyószentmiklós közelében. A Békás-szoros egy megejtően szép, szűk hasadék, melyet a Békás-patak alakított ki.
